One such voice is Author Stacia Moffett, whose gripping novels The Missing Girl and Jessa’s Back take readers on a deep, emotional journey into the complexities of race, identity, and history.
In The Missing Girl, set in rural Radford, Tennessee, during the 1950s, we follow Jessa, a young girl who flees after the tragic deaths of her parents and grandfather in a car accident. As Jessa runs away with her dog, Cassie, her disappearance creates turmoil not only for the town but for the sheriff, the community’s residents, and the Black families who find themselves under suspicion. This novel explores the racial tensions of the era, illustrating how white supremacy and distrust shaped the response to Jessa’s absence.
The story doesn't stop with just one book. In Jessa’s Back, the stakes only rise as the shadows of the past continue to shape the future. These novels are a stark reflection of the dangers of racial prejudice in the 1950s South, with powerful connections to the world we live in today. Moffett, herself, was inspired by current events to confront the parallels with the white supremacy of the past and felt compelled to write these stories as a means of reflection and understanding.
Moffett describes these books as "wholly fiction," yet they are undeniably woven from her own experiences and her deep love of the South and its people. The characters and their stories are the foundation for a broader conversation—one that encourages us to examine how the echoes of the past continue to shape our present.
